Questions ?
1.My accent is part of my cultural heritage and it is part of me. I'm not interested in accent reduction or losing my accent completely so why should I change it?
Absolutely, and you should not have to completely change it unless it is your choice. My classes are not about losing your accent but about modifying it so you speak with clarity. It is more accent modification so you attain speech clarity and English fluency. This allows your listeners to fully understand you so that they can focus totally on your message.
3. Do you accept extended benefits?
Unfortunately, I do not. I am a BC certified classroom and ESL teacher with a TESOL certificate, and I received my training as a certified accent specialist under a speech-language pathologist who is based in New York City.
Because of my training and experience as both a teacher and an accent specialist, I am able, as an accent coach, to provide all my clients the knowledge that is required to modify their accent and improve their speech but in a less clinical manner.
4. I have never done any accent modification or speech improvement. Is that okay? I am a bit nervous and anxious, especially learning with others who may be better than me.
It certainly is okay! In fact, most students are new to it and everyone is a bit nervous when they start, but once we start our work those feelings soon disappear. Just remember, almost everyone is feeling the same way. And, in fact, those feelings seem to create a more supportive environment amongst each group.
2. I am uncertain where to start and if I need to learn everything. What should I do?
If you like, you can book a 50 minute assessment which can give you a better idea as to where your challenges lie.
